Why I picked Storm & GSS

As a now 2nd-year stormer I experienced a lot in my first year of Storm and GSS. Always having lots of fun during Storm events and learning a lot in the GSS-courses, but as the second year has arrived I sometimes can’t help but question why I picked this program. Why I picked this as my new stop on the road that we call life. I know I have not been the only one to question their study choice. Therefore, a couple of months ago I wrote this story, that helped me reconfirm that I took the right decision in joining Storm & GSS. I now make this blogpost to share this story. Here it is...

It’s early in the morning. You rise out of bed onto the streets of your world. You haven’t slept. The sun glows its orange rays into beautiful morning sky. It’s so early that even the birds aren’t awake. You wander around for a while until you reach the only crossing of your town. Your mayor has recently added a traffic light, which you find stupid. But sadly, finding things stupid does not get you anywhere. As you get near the traffic light you hear it slowly ticking indicating a red light. You wait.

Tick, Tick, Tick

And as you wait, you ask to yourself. Why am I waiting? There is no one around. You could just easily cross the street, there would be no harm done. As quickly as this thought enters your brain it leaves again with the morning breeze. You wait.

Tick, Tick, Tick, Tick, Tick

This waiting is stupid, you get frustrated, swearing to your legs why they don’t want to move. Something inside of you is holding you back. Somehow you believe that waiting for the green is what you should be doing, most people wait. How bad is it to just wait a little bit longer? You calm yourself.

Tick, Tick, Tick, Tick, Tick, Tick, Tick, Tick, Tick, Tick, Ti...

HONK! You wake up by the sound of a loud car horn.

“Get out of the way, you idiot.”

It's the baker going to work. You fell asleep on the side of the road.

“I’m sorry, I... I was waiting for the green.”

“Waiting for the green? This traffic light is broken.”

You can't believe it but as you look up the light is still red, it has always been red.

“Sorry that I got so angry buddy. Just don't be sleeping on the side of the road will ya, it’s dangerous!”

As you see his red rear lights pull away you feel hit by this weird emotion. The baker stops at his bakery about half a mile ahead, you whisper after him knowing he can’t possibly hear you.

“Thank you” you whisper. “Thank you”.

You move across the road. It’s liberating. You don’t remember why you were even going this way but at least you’re getting somewhere. Finally, you’re getting somewhere.

Tick, Tick, Tick, Tick

THE END

As with all stories, the meaning you derive from it might be different from mine. You might think it’s terrible, which is also fair.

But the meaning I derive from it, is that in this world with climate change it is easy to solely rely on others. In fact, you might even think it is what you’re supposed to do. These ‘’smart’’ people in power of earth today will solve all our issues. *Spoiler alert* They won’t. This study and together with all stormers we can really try to achieve change. We might not know what change is, and how we will achieve it is but at least we’re doing something. Finally, we are doing something.
