MAPS, an initiative started by the Parvati Organization, declares the Arctic Ocean north of the Arctic Circle an international peace park, free from exploitation of all kinds, in perpetuity. As such, MAPS creates the world’s largest marine protected area. The ice that supports life on Earth can regenerate, preventing worse floods, droughts, famine, displacement and subsequent conflict. At the same time, stopping the use of Arctic oil for good creates a powerful ripple effect, compelling a global shift to renewable energy, and encouraging countries and businesses to pivot from short-term benefit for a few to supporting the long-term good of all.

To realize MAPS immediately, Parvati.org has created the MAPS Treaty as an addendum to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, translated it into the six official languages of the UN, and provided it to all 193 UN member states. We have brought it to COP21, 22 and 23 and UNGA 72; and will be at UNGA 73 and COP24. With the signatures of 99 countries, the MAPS Treaty enters into force. It has already been signed by Samoa and other countries are following suit. But we have little time before the ice runs out.

On the 17th of September, a representative from the Parvati organization will give an online presentation all the way from Canada, about what MAPS is. The presentation will be followed by a Q&A session.

This is a great opportunity to get to know this initiative! Hope to see you there.
